DJ Interviews: Sonic X band

Heres my interview with band, Sonic X enjoy!

How'd you get started in music? - I started playing in my early teens, at first I wanted to be a guitar player so I took classical guitar lessons for a short time. That didn't last too long as I really just wanted to learn guitar so I can ROCK OUT! However, the friends I was playing with also wanted to play guitar so I decided to switch to bass guitar instead. It turned out to be a great decision as there was always a shortage of bass players so it was easy to find bands to play with as bass players were in demand.
As I got older I was the one who always started bands so I would say playing bass has served me well.

Who are your inspirations or influences? As a Bass player, I was really intrigued by John Entwistle from the Who, he had such a unique style and sound that I was really drawn to. Of course there are so many great players out there, I also really love John Paul Jones and Steve Harris from a hard rock perspective. Then of course the greats like Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius. I was a roadie for Stanley Clarke for 1 show in my teens and I was blown away and was influenced and motivated from him after that.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers? I would say to put yourself out there. Play in from of people as much as you can and start early on. It builds confidence and also gives you the poise to pull off a great live show. Also, don't get rattled if you make a mistake as in most cases people don't even notice, people hear with their eyes on most live settings so if you show you made a mistake, people will notice more...own the stage!!!

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands? Sonic X is a collaborative effort and we all bring a unique style to the writing and performance of our music. What sets us apart is that we own the process from start to finish, we write the songs, we produce and engineer our songs and albums. We control the whole process so we are very fortunate. A lot of bands have to book studio time and then are at the mercy of the engineer or producer to interpret how the band wants to sound then try to make it all work. We know how we want to sound and get that sound. Joey Greco, our singer/drummer, is a very accomplished Engineer/Producer and has a vast knowledge of how studio gear works. We are very fortunate to be able to have all the control we have.

Any new gigs or albums in the future? At the moment we are working on a new album that will be released in January 2023. We realize we just released a new album in January 2022, however, we have a ton of new songs that we've written and are anxious to get out to the fans. We are currently reviewing any shows that come our way. We may venture out and do some shows before the new album is released, right now that's up in the air, but after the new album is released we will definitely be out there playing shows.

Bonus question: How'd you come up with your band name? Sonic X meaning is Sonic - which means sound and X which is the Roman numeral for 10, which is the time between when the band broke up, then re-joined to form Sonic X. We were previously called L.A. when the band broke up in 1994, then we reformed 10 years later in 2004 when we released our 1st album under the name Sonic X. Our 1st album called "Sonic X" was released with a now defunct label called "Z Records" and is a hard album to find!

DJ Interviews: The Word66

Heres my interview with band, The Word66

How'd you get started in music?
I would have to say that ever since I (Steve) was a little kid, that is all I ever wanted to do. Music was always a major part of my life. I remeber cranking up the music, standing on some furniture, and making believe I was singing and playing guitar. And of course, my parents yelling at me to turn it down. ðŸ™‚ My first instrument, begrudgingly, was the trumpet. Eventually when I saved up enough birthday and Christmas money, I bought my first guitar.

Who are your inspirations or influences?
Band wise, I was a huge Sabbath fan. Loved Priest, Zeppelin, Thousand Foot Krutch, Disciple and Skillett, to name a few. Guitar wise, love Vai, Petrucci, Satriani, Gary Moore, Michael Shenker.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?
It takes a lot of leg work, especially if you are unsigned. Be honest with what you have. Are you really good enough to make a run at it? If so, make sure that you have a professional product to represent the band. Spend the money and make a professional recording. If you are going to record your music in your bedroom, unless you are an amazing producer and engineer with a lot of tricks up your sleeve, it's going to sound cheap and you will lose credibility. Spend a lot of time researching places to send your music and put together a professional email.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?
We have been told that we have a bit of a signature sound. I guess my writing style along with Brian's vocals and our wonderful producer Vinny Castaldo make it a team effort. We also have the awesome Danny Miranda from Queen and Blue Oyster Cult rocking out the bass lines on the new record. We always send out a positive message with all of the music. Something we believe is welcomed in these troubled times.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

Yes, we just released a new single called "Tonight is the night," and the new record "Rock & Roll Preaching" should be out next month. Also, currently looking into doing a video for it as well. Performance wise, we should be out live shortly and really looking forward to bringing our new show to the fans. We have some fun things planned. It should be fun and entertaining.

DJ Interviews: Moonscar Music

Hey there guys, DJ Dizzy here & this is my interview with Moonscar Music

How'd you get started in music?

We all had our own journeys that have brought us to this point. Chris’s mom and dad both played guitar and when Chris was bored his mother would tell him to go play your fathers guitar. Plus his brother Dave played drums around him all the time so he fell into it naturally. Tommy Started playing when he was 5. Then elementary school band when he was 6 and played brass low brass till he graduated. Picked up guitar around 11, bass at 21. Bobby started in high school with marching drums and continued to play music throughout the years. His brother Timmy played guitar so they were both always involved in bands. Frank started off playing saxophone in junior high and started singing in junior high choir, later he got his first guitar for Christmas. His uncle showed him how to tune it and a few chords to practice. Later he joined a band with some school friends singing and playing guitar. We all knew each other or of each other. Hung out with the same crowd of friends, but at different times in our lives. Bobby and Chris were playing together years ago and Frank was at the show watching them. That band was called MoonScar. Tommy was friends with mutual friends Frank had. Chris and Tommy were in a band together called This Machine. Bobby and Frank were working on a few tracks together when Chris and Bobby started recording one take tracks. Frank asked if he could put vocals on them, and it took off. We needed a bass player and Tommy was the logical choice and we asked him to join us which he accepted and MoonScar was reborn.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

We have so many different influences. A lot of similar ones. Classics like Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen’s guitar work were really big influences on Chris and Frank. Chris loves Nuno Bettencourt, Eric Johnson. Dimebag Darrell, George Lynch, Jason Becker, Zakk Wylde. We all were into metal growing up. Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera. Grunge music shaped us collectively and still has a big influence on us today. Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam. Bands like Kings X and Tool, and artists like Prince who were so different and brilliant and made us look at music differently. A lot of modern influences like Killswitch Engage, Karnivool, Mudvayne. Tommy’s influences  are across the board as well, Prog metal, pop, metal, grunge, funk, bluegrass, folk, metal core, birds, car horns, arguing old couples, literally anything can be an influence. Bobby really loved drummers Dave Abbruzzese from Pearl Jam, Nico McBrain from Iron Maiden, Vinny Paul from Pantera, and John Bonham from Led Zepplin. Frank loved the Smashing Pumpkins, Prince, Alice In Chains, Living Color, and Van Halen. You can hear the influences in our music. There’s a lot of different influences, but somehow we make it our own.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Be yourself! Sure there’s only 12 notes in music and something’s may sound similar, but what makes it different is what you bring to it. Help others. So many bands have this junior high mindset about being competitive or “better” than others. The best local scenes are the ones who embrace each other’s music and grow together. Check your ego at the door!  Shows become better, more people get turned onto your music and the music of others that way. It’s ok to be competitive with yourself and inspired by others to improve your craft, just not to alienate others and yourselves in the process. We all love to play live and write, but reaching someone emotionally through your music is therapy. If it impacts or changes someone’s life for the better you become more than a musician, you connect with them and that’s what music is all about.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

We don’t really focus on on setting ourselves apart. We focus on the music we love to make. We feel that the fun part of being in a band is being around others you love and respect. We don’t want it to feel like clocking in for a job because at that point is wouldn’t be fun. The passion, fun, and love for what we do and each other makes us who we are. MoonScar

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

We are planning a few events and gigs in the Bluefield, WV/VA area. Looking for regional shows and festivals to play. We are constantly in writing and recording mode. We currently have 18 songs. Working on getting our website www.moonscarband.com up and running. Putting some songs together for an “album” and putting it on Spot, iTunes. This past year we have pumped out a lot of songs, so it may be an album and an EP.

DJ Interviews: The Tropicanas

Hey there everyone, DJ Dizzy here, & here's my interview with a band who call themselves The Tropicanas.

We started playing together a while back, just messing around really. We all got into music from an early age, personally for me it was listening to my dad's records from an early age.

We all have different influences, alot of them are lofi home, or bedroom recorders who just kinda showed us you can do it yourself, hence our do it ourselves approach to pretty much everything!

I'd say, good advice it to really commit, personally, to being a creative, a musician or any artist. You have to be brave and show yourself, don't worry about what others are doing! Also that it's hard and sometimes unrewarding so you have to push through those moments of self doubt.

We make music like noone else around us, our influences tend to be bands people don't mostly listen to. We don't try to be different We just are, we have fun and while we take our music seriously we like to not be so serious or precious about our look or how we are perceived.

We have a double a side single coming out on the 1st July which you can presave here

https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/thetropicanas/the-way-she-goes--stinking-ship

And we have 2 gigs booked in August, one on the 12th at broadcast in Glasgow and then one on thr 20th at Sneaky petes, where we are going to be playing some new tunes!

A Special Request from a DJ

Hey there guys its DJ Dizzy & I'm going to need your help, here's what's up, I did an interview recently with Kaysien & he said that he was looking for some musicians to perform in a new band he's forming but the thing is they need to be in London.

I speak from experience because I too am a musician whose life long dream is to play in a band & I've been at it for a while what with taking piano lessons, but aside from that we musiciains no matter where we come from or who we are have to come together for the sake of making music because that's the whole purpose of playing in a band next to making friends is all about. So to any musicians who happen to live in London please help out Kaysien, you don't need to be a seasoned professional but about your own sound. He really needs your help also feel free to check out some of his work by way of his Youtube channel if interested.

There shall be some links located down below, until then stay awesome & rock n roll!

DJ Interviews: Kaysien

Hey there guys DJ Dizzy here & here's my itertview with singer Kaysien

How'd you get started in music?

I believe that music is another element of nature. As far as I’m aware, everything vibrates at a certain frequency. I started expressing myself through music as a means of authentic communication. I began with vocals, moved on to drums, bass and guitar, most recently piano while all along the way recording and producing. I’ve been in bands, worked as a runner at studios, had my own production business, played as a session musician for artists and once, percussion in a west end show! I’m now fully focused on my Artistic journey.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

There are many and few! Upfront would be Ben Harper, Busta Rhymes, Bjork & Fat Freddie’s Drop.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Be kind to yourself, work diligently, improve self awareness and find supportive, positive company!

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

Best answer would be to listen to my music with the knowledge that I’ve written & arranged, played all the instruments, sung, engineered, produced & mixed everything myself along with creating the artwork and videos. I’m also self taught.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

I have a new track coming out on the 24th of June. I’m also seeking musicians for my band!

DJ Interviews: Black Creek Rock

Hey there guys DJ Dizzy here & this is my interview with band Black Creek Rock

How'd you get started in music?

Matt:  There was always music in my home as a child during the 80s.  My father had a fairly extensive record collection that included, of course, the best of the 60s and 70s:  The Beatles, Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, Motown and a host of other very popular stuff.  He also had a copy of King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King.  That album cover scared the living daylights out of me, but the music within affected me to a much greater degree, as it was much different than what was on the radio.

Jeff:  From a young age, I’ve always been fascinated with music.  I grew up with an older sister, and two brothers.  All of them were into music, as well.  We were all in our school’s music programs, at some point.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

Matt:  I've already mentioned the early influence of King Crimson during my developmental years.  At the age of 12, I discovered KISS and the playing of Ace Frehley inspired me a great deal.  Before long, I picked up on Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.  I was also drawn to more regional talent during my teen years, especially Georgia bands like Drivin' n' Cryin'.

Jeff:   I grew up listening to what my oldest brother listened to.  We listened to a lot of Van Halen. So, Alex Van Halen sparked my love for the drums and percussion instruments, early on.  Towards my pre-teen years, I got into some of the British bands. Such as Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.  John Bonham just blew me away.  So, between Alex Van Halen and Bonzo, they really did ignite my passion for the percussive side of music.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Matt:  I would advise this - Make music that appeals to your senses, rather than attempting to make it for others.  The sheer volume of new music being released makes finding an audience difficult, so there's a very good chance that you and only a few close supporters will be the only ones listening.  In the years to come you're going to look back on your musical endeavors, especially recorded music.  That hindsight will be better if you enjoy your own output.

Jeff:  I would offer some advice for aspiring performers…Write and play music that you love.  Someone else is bound to love it as well.  And keep it up, don’t give up doing what you love.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

Matt:  We pay absolutely no attention to what is popular at the moment.  We make what we wish.  Those are highly cliched statements, and I know that doesn't automatically sets us apart from others, as I would hope that most artists do the same.  There is such a huge amount of stuff being released, both by the labels and the independents, that anyone can find others doing similar things as themselves.  So I suppose I must say that we don't actually try to set ourselves apart from any other artist.  We're really just being ourselves.

Jeff:  I believe we (Matt, and I) can set ourselves apart from a lot of other bands.  We both have full-time jobs, and have raised, and are still raising kids.  I like to think of us as the working man’s rock n’ roll.  I would love to be able to make music as a full-time career.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

Matt:  I'm glad you asked that.  Our third album, Southern Gothic, will be released on all the streamers July 22, 2022.  We're trying some things we've not done before: among them country music.  I've come into possession of a 1974 Emmons pedal steel guitar, and after a little study I've actually managed to get some usable sounds out of it.  We're only using it on a couple of tracks, but that's a start.  Overall, the new album has a broader stylistic range:  We're calling it a rock-country-metal-Americana-piano pop record.  As for gigging, there is not much out there in our neck of the woods:  rural Alabama.  Yes, there are bars where we could land gigs, but we've done that before.  It's quite annoying when you're playing your tunes and the drunks in the back keep calling out, "Play some Metallica!".  Sure, we can play Metallica, but we don't want to.  We want to play our music.

Jeff:  Matt and I, are about to have our third album “Southern Gothic” released summer of 2022.  We still get together to write, and record music.  So, there will be more music coming.

Sound Off: Maddison Beaz on AGT

Hey there everypne, DJ Dizzy here, & I'm taking a break from the music to speak on that of giving already well known folks an upperhand on the hit show America's Got Talent.

Now I had spoke about this once before with singing group Us The Duo, & recently they've let yet another well known talent through by way of the golden buzzer, that of Maddison Beaz who is perhaps known for playing kid Selena in the Netflix series Selena from what I've found out. I also managed to do some more digging as well & she's also a well known actress who has also done some movies at that. So in all honesty I think she's using the show to launch her singing career especially having saw her audition.

While I'll admit that she can sing she's also going to put some of the contestants at a disadvantage because she's already famous & in all truth shoudn't really take part because of that and from what I gathered she supposedly was hand picked from the audience so while I don't doubt that she has talent I'm having my share of mixed thoughts because of this & my main point is to give others a chance to shine regardless if you're already famous because there's lots of undiscovered talent out there as is, but if you want to share your thoughts be sure to comment & also check out the links below to find out more about her & I'll catch you on The Flipside. Stay awesome & rock n roll!

DJ Interviews: Last Snow

Hey there all DJ Dizzy here, & here's my interview with band The Last Snow. Enjoy!

How'd you get started in music?
We have all been playing instruments and involved in music from a young age. As a band we came together as a three piece after performing together in some other bands. It just seemed like the right combination. We get along well and have a similar outlook on music and the band!

Who are your inspirations or influences?
Our inspirations are many and varied. We draw from The Cure, The Misfits, Iron Maiden, Husker Du, Peter Murphy, Robyn Hitchcock, and so many more.

What advice would offer aspiring performers?
Well, the hard truth nugget is what we would offer. The music industry has opened up with digital distribution. Now anyone can get their music out there. This is great news for the indie musician! But here is the hard truth: you most likely will not make a living off your music. Make sure you work on getting a good day job to support your music. Otherwise you will have a hard time affording the production costs associated with producing solid recordings and promoting them!!

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?
Good question. This is something every musician should ask themselves if they want to be noticed! First some cliche: we put the music first. What we mean by that is this: as mentioned earlier, we have a wide spread group of inspirations. We love music and decided we don’t want to be nailed down to specifically to any particular genre beyond “rock.” So we bring elements from a very eclectic musical background to produce a sound that is very much Last Snow!

Any new gigs or albums in the future?
The COVID stuff affected us as it has many bands. It really fouled up our plans, but we definitely have a few new songs brewing!! We plan to release a new Album sometime before the end of this year!

Special thanks to them for this interview & I wish them lots of luck in their music also be sure to check out the following links
to check out their music & learn more about them.  Until then I'll catch you on The Flipside! Stay awesome & rock n roll!

DJ Interviews: DJ Cybertsai

Hey there everyone DJ Dizzy here & here's my interview with fellow Deejay, DJ Cybertsai

How'd you get started in music?

As a high school student I always wanted to be a singer. I always wanted to sing in front of audiences. At school I was part of the school choir. After that the feeling waned a little until I discovered DJing and EDM. It was a great integration of dance and song. So I turned my attention to creating dance music especially Trance and Techno music.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

When I was in high school my favourite singers were Roy Orbison, The Beatles, Alan Tam (Hong Kong Singer, My mother is from Hong Kong, so I had some influences from Hong Kong Music scene) and few others. Now for my EDM I love Armin Van Buuren, RAM, Susana, Paul Van Dyk, and Carl Cox. They all have influenced me in how I make my music how I portray myself in public and how to be a great musician.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Three things to make sure of:
1. Make sure your music is right.
2. Make sure to treat your fans right
3. Make sure to treat yourself right
If you get these things right the fans will support you all the way. And health is a major priority especially mental health don't burn yourself out make sure to enjoy life now and again.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

I recently just changed up my image to be the Gentleman DJ. I'm always in a suit and tie while I DJ.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

I will have a new track at the end of this month (June) and an EP coming out at the end of July. The track this month is called: Living in Motion.  It's a Trance track about the our lives perpetually in motion and how we move and flow along with the tides of life.

DJ Inteviews: MIK's Reaction

Hello everyone, DJ Dizzy here & this is my interview with band, MIK's Reaction if you'd like to check out more of their stuff be sure to click the links listed

 as part of their interview.

How'd you get started in music?

From as early as I can remember, I’ve always loved music.

I think the triangle is a much maligned instrument – I was a prodigy & studied it at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, from the age of 12.
By the time I was 15 I was considered a maestro and the rest, as they say, is history.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

The Beatles of course are the masters of 4-part triangle, and they are well known for their experimentation with music.
Most people think that it was a hammer and anvil they used in Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. In actual fact it was 3 bass triangles and an alto, along with some very ingenious backmasking.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

The best advice I could give anyone, not just aspiring performers, is to check out my Youtube Channel:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMNWxrs7-dVlY1J-H5NzINg
There you will find the mysteries of the world unlocked. Also, some pretty funny videos, some serious ones and lots of good music (and triangles)

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?-

Full distortion and tube screamers really bring out the tinny quality of triangles. Under-utilised by other bands.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

MIK’s Reaction and the Hobart Symphony Orchestra at The Hollywood Bowl is already sold out.
Every member of the audience is asked to bring their own triangle and to join in. Clapping and foot stomping is strictly forbidden.

I am also releasing my next single, 12 O’clock Again, on the 1st of August.
Here’s a link to my Spotify page, where you’ll be able to find all my other releases too: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0LS00Hi5R6PcZ9mfPTjSMg

DJ Interviews: Aldo Rox

Hey there all here's my interview with Micky V of the band Aldo Rox

How'd you get started in music?

I was 17 and met a friend with similar interests, music, skating, etc.  I went over to his house and he showed me an electric guitar his older brother had just left him before moving out
I had never seen one up close, it was amazing and I was instantly obsessed with it and immediately bought a guitar, amp , drum machine and began learning it like a mad possessed scientist!

Who are your inspirations or influences?

I love all genres of music but my love of guitar and techno/alternative  led me to Rammstein, NIN, Sisters of Mercy.  As well as Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, Depeche Mode. As for producing and songwriting I follow Eric Valentine, and Jack Arnoff.  Anything Punk and Skaterock too!!

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Learn an instrument, bass, guitar or synth.  It's easy and you'll start making music almost immediately as you grow.  Make mistakes, learn from them and always be respectable to others in and out of your band.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

Writing 100's of original songs, it just ends up being unique, good or bad it ends up sounding like us. Keeping it simple like punk, but with a little of pop makes it a bit more accessible to new ears.  Break the rules and don't be afraid of expressing yourself no matter how weird!

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

I belong to several platforms that keep me busy doing Voice Acting and writing melodies or complete songs for a variety of purposes.  From animation, commercials, collaborations, etc. In between I'm able to squeeze out a song here and there.  We hope to do more Aldo Rox projects in the near future then a few shows!!

Special thanks to him for this interview & I wish him lots of luck in his music. So until then I'l catch you on The Flipside! Stay awesome & rock n roll!

VOLKER MILCH was founded in 2015 by two friends as an electropop duo. They have been friends for over 30 years and the music has always been a connecting element for the two. VOLKER MILCH was initially characterized by the electronic music of the 80s.
Since 2019 VOLKER MILCH is an independent solo musican. His music moves predominantly in the genres indie and electropop. Volker Milch relies on English-speaking sample parts predominantly of female singers. From time to time he collaborates with other artists, creating remixes or new tracks.

Who are your inspirations or influences?
Depeche Mode, Twenty One Pilots, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, Editors and more!

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?
Music should be made out of passion, not to become famous or successful. Only very few people manage to do that.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?
My musical preferences are relatively broad, which is also reflected in my music: It moves in the broadest sense between indie and electropop: The listener has to be ready to go along.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?
You can expect a new song from me about every three months. Otherwise you can find news on the news ticker on my website (www.volkermilch.com) and on my social media channels. Join me on my musical journey on all my internet channels!

DJ Interviews: Space N Time

Hey there guys DJ Dizzy here & here's my interview with musician & beatmaker, Space N Time

Get started in music :

Always had the deep curiosity of how beats were made. Was a huge fan of hip hop like if it were just natural as a kid

Inspirations:

Nipsey Hussle and Schoolboy Q as artists

Influences:

Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, DJ QUIK, Mustard, and Three Six Mafia are some of the very strong influences you can hear in my music.

Advice to aspirin musicians:

Perfect your craft work extremely hard at it. Believe in the 10,000 rule but it doesn't end there the work keeps going and the learning never stops. Never be satisfied.

What sets me apart:

I don't use copyrighted music/melodies in my beats. I took a lot of pride in becoming a composer first on the keys and learn music theory at a basic level.

New projects coming up: I can't really leak them out though.

Special thanks to him on this interview & lots of luck to him in his music so until then I'll catch you on The Flipside! Stay awesome & rock n roll!

DJ Interviews: SuckerPie

Hey there, all DJ Dizzy here & here's my interview with the band Sucker pie

How'd you get started in music?

Well first off, thank you so much for doing this interview, it’s my very first one! I’ll try not to say anything dumb.

That being said, I started playing guitar when I was 13 after seeing my first concert (AC/DC) and stuck with it for a while, but never really got serious enough about it. I took a few years off when the kids were born, and then decided as they got a little older that I wanted to show them that I actually did something with my hobby, so I took it up again. At that point I started recording some of my old songs again to be distributed digitally under the name MONKEYBALL. I started by myself in the basement with a digital 8 track recorder, and electronic drum set, so I could record after the kids were in bed without being loud. Those three elements are still a part of my “process” today.

After a bit I found that the MONKEYBALL name was not going to work so I decided on SUCKERPIE, named after one of my songs. It was the only song I could search on Google and have it come up right away since it was such a weird word… so I figured I’d be easier to find that way. Plus, all the good names truly are taken.  Given a bunch of time during the pandemic, I finished most of those songs and wrote several more, and that has led to the SUCKERPIE repertoire of today. You can still find two MONKEYBALL songs out there, “Frostberg 2000” and “Hole Hog”.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

Well as a kid I ate up my parents’ record collection… my mom liked the Motown stuff, and Buddy Holly, et. al., and my dad was more Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers type of stuff… and of course they met in the middle with the Beatles, so I digested a lot of that in my formative years. Then when I was 11 or 12 a kid moved in next door with a handful of Motley Crue, Aerosmith and AC/DC records and I was off and running. Nowadays, I’d say I’m influenced by “heavy, blues based riff rock” overall. As far as structuring, orchestration, and overall aesthetic I’m usually ripping off at least one of my “big three” which are Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Metallica, with sprinkles of other stuff dropped in.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Well, I don’t know if they’d want my advice since I’ve only sold about 22 bucks’ worth of streams, but here goes. My advice is to start the ball rolling in any way you can. I know talented musicians who are planning to do what I do but they are holding off until they get certain equipment, or a certain living situation, or whatever. Honestly, my first recordings sounded terrible (but still somehow endearing). But, over the years I learned a few things about equipment, microphones, etc., and have improved my sound vastly, to my ears anyway. If I had waited until now to get started, I’d still have to work out all those bugs and at my age I’d rather spend my time writing songs. Start with what you can do, and then you will actually HAVE something. When someone asks you what type of music you play, you can show them. Put your music out there, and you never know. Maybe you’ll gain fame as an artist. Maybe someone will hear your songs and say, “I could do something with that”, and buy them… or want to collaborate! Maybe one of your favorite artists will hear it and want to cover it. But you gotta have the stuff out there when opportunity knocks or it’s all just a bunch of ideas and talk. And then once you've gotten comfortable at that level, you just take it step by step. Once I had about 7 or 8 songs done, I decided I had enough to start trying to promote them online, which is something I’m still learning the ropes of now, and again in a limited way, but I just go one step at a time. You’re the only one who can bring your songs to the world, so be proud of them and don’t let them down!

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

I use a two – tiered method. Tier one involves “primitive recording techniques” as outlined above, and the other key to my sound is “mistakes”. I am definitely one to leave a take in that has a few mistakes, if it captures some element of the vibe I am looking for (plus, I’m not that great a player to NOT have them). When I listen to my songs amongst the playlists that people have been kind enough to include me in, I find that most of the production and performance on all the others is very slick, but I always find myself preferring my songs, because of course I do. I wrote them so I would like them! But I’m definitely challenging people to hear my good songs through my bad performances.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

Well I am a one man show, so a gig would be a problem. Someday, if I sell so many streams that my “public” demands a show, I’ll round up some players. Until then, I am happy to just keep cranking the songs out from the basement. In fact, if I could make a living doing that I wouldn’t even care to play out. I would love to be the world’s first successful “streaming only” artist. The part I enjoy most is putting the songs together and coming up with the ideas. But song wise, I am always working on new stuff. I have two more songs almost ready, just waiting for the family to go out for the day so I can record some vocals. So everyone be on the lookout for that!! Thank you again and cheers!
