DJ Interviews: Soulpax

Hey there everyone DJ Dizzy here & I say down with a band who answer to Soulpax who had a lot to say on their music & success. So here we go!

How'd you get started in music?

We've both been involved in music from a very early age, singing in choirs, playing guitar in school ensembles, and of course playing with our childhood bands. We were about 17 when we met, both trying to get into Berklee with our respective instruments. After meeting at lunch with Livingston Taylor, James Taylor's brother and professor at Berklee, we started writing together. At that point, we spent a lot of time writing for fun as we developed our skills and learned how to write with each other.  With hard work and a lot of prep we both were accepted into Berklee and were able to continue our writing; that's when we started our serous project, Soulpax.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

We're both very influenced by the greats of jazz and blues such as Grant Green, Otis Rush, and Aretha Franklin. We also listen to a lot of current r&b and retro soul groups like Durand Jones and the Indications, Alabama Shakes, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, and Lady Wray. We hope to play a bill with them someday!

What advice would offer aspiring performers?

Don't ever put yourself in a box, other people will do that for you. Be as true to yourself as possible, be open to trying new things, and don't be afraid of failure. The two of us have had a few failures, but we never let that define us, we build success off of that experience.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

Together we are able to write songs that highlight the classic artists who have influenced us growing up, but with a new, modern vibe.  Because of our shared name, we've always joked that we're the same person with two different genders, but we're actually very different people. That's what makes it special: we compliment each other and both bring something important to the table.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?
