Here's my interview with Ben Hornby & Paul Collins of the band The Goodstock Project as they shared the band's musical beginnings
How'd you get started in music?
Between the four of us, I think we'd blame Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, and The Stone Roses for making us want to be in bands and make music. Three of us met at university and were in several bands before our current incarnation - The Goodstock Project. We were lucky enough to find June, our singer, on a musician-finding app. She absolutely blew us away with the first vocal take she did and was recruited immediately.
Who are your inspirations or influences?
All of the above, plus we have rock, metal, Madchester, dance, rave and 60s soul and motown DNA. So, lots of things go into the mix to create a Goodstock Project tune; we always need a big phat drums and bass sound, guitars and keys for texture and a huge soaring vocal over the top of it all.
What advice would you offer aspiring performers?
Don't get hung up on numbers (e.g. socials and streaming). First and foremost, have a great time making a racket, creating melodies and singing your own words. Just enjoy that part, because it's where all the magic comes from!
How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?
The most important thing is we are ourselves. June sings like June, Ben drums like Ben, there's no conscious effort to sound the same as anyone or different from anyone. It's just a natural, organic thing.
Any new gigs or albums in the future?
Yes and yes :). The current single, "Demands of Reality", has been out for a couple of weeks, and a new one is in the can, ready to go. We're also excited to be currently working out the details of which lucky venue gets to host our full band debut gig (top billing, of course! :)).
