How'd you get started in music?

Pretty much everyone in my family was a musician. My father would tell me stories about him as a bass player in the 60s and mother would tell me about her time as a concert pianist, she was really good. When  I was about 15 my best friend was a singer and guitar player. He wanted to start a band so I began learning so that I could help out. Fell in love with playing and writing.  

Who are your inspirations or influences?

My wife and son are my top inspirations, 2nd inspiration is my daily battle with addiction and my commitment to never give up. My influences range, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, sevendust, Chevelle, Korn, Machine Head, to todays artists such as Bring me the Horizon.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

stick to what you love. Do it for you first and never give up. Work at it everyday and push it forward everyday. There is something unique and special about every songwriter, let that come out. Don’t chase trends, set your own. 

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

By realizing it’s not a competition.  We are all unique and have something different to offer 

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

currently we have 8 songs tracked that we are going to be breaking up into two 4 song eps.  1st will be early 2022 and the second around April, about that same time we will be getting back to playing live.

1. I got started in Music when I was around 11 or 12.. I started writing songs with my friends in middle school. I excelled pretty well and we called ourselves the jury boyz. We weren’t even promoting jewelry.. one of my friends dad made music and called himself the judge so yeah you get the rest.. 

2. I love stories, I love creative masterpieces I’m inspired by everything but the artist I feel crossed that those boundaries for for me! Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, T Pain, Notorious Big, ty Dolla $ign, Mac Miller, Drake the list continues 24 HRs, kid cudi, Rick Ross, wale, k camp, young thug, juice wrld. They all worked for it. Few more I’ll mention later 

3. I’d say be open to change meaning actually listening to constructive criticism, and making changes. make sure they know who you are. And leave something with your audience! A memory, advice, positivity, merch! You are your buisness you are the artist! 

4. I have to be by myself. I have to make it authentic, I have to stay consistent, and I have to express myself when I feel passionate. That alone will set me apart. 

5. I have an album dropping 2022 summer called. Can’t call it. It will speak on a broken but not fearful society. I think this project will go down as one of my best and I can say I don’t think I was inspired by anyone on this album. I think I’m as me as possible. My truest self.

DJ Interviews: Alexa Moon

Hello everyone here's my interview with singer Alexa Moon.

Turkish independent music artist Alexa Moon released her 8-track pop-folk, singer/songwriter, acoustic English debut album on November 12, which she named "SIGNS". She was the vocalist, composer, lyricist, and producer for the album. The album was recorded in a home studio with just a few pieces of equipment. Moon, who has released a total of 12 songs including her debut album so far, has signed 3 different collaborations. 

Discovered by DJ Skyrock through the covers she posted on YouTube in 2019, she released her first collaborative single with him "Lunation"(EDM), later with Neutron Inv. and Jamie Black 

Alexa Moon was born on June 20, 2002, in Izmir and still resides here with her family. Even though she is a grade 1 electrical-electronic engineering student, music always comes first for her. So much so that she taught English and play the guitar herself. 

Expressing that she has clung to life through music, that she sees music as the best and only way for people to express themselves, she emphasizes that music also has an instructive side, just like in books and movies. Moon's goal is to touch people's hearts with her songs, to convey her own feelings and experiences to people, to help them in their struggles, and to show them that they are never alone. Believing in the sanctity of music, 

Moon's adventure of becoming a musician, as crazy as it may sound, became definite when she liked a famous musician. According to Moon, who said that although she was born into music, she was a little late in discovering herself by being shy and late, in the end, this courage was born from the desire to reach the person she liked*.

A few additional information for the album review: “Alexa started writing these songs at the age of 14 when she first got her guitar when she didn't even know how to play it yet. She carefully prepared the place and order of each song in the album. And at the end of 5 years, she released her debut album. We know that the only subject she had no difficulty with was the "album title". 

With the inspiration she got from the person who is the reason why she started to make music, she saw many events while writing the album as the "signs" that she was on the right way and continued. So she decided without hesitation that the title of the album should be "Signs". However, the songs have been rearranged many times with her life and experiences that have changed in this long period of time. She even had a song that she composed again from scratch until the album was released and the lyrics that came to mind at the last moment. She didn't miss any details, in short, she tried for the best.”

How'd you get started in music?

My late brother was the person who kick started my interest in music and got me my first bass guitar when I was 12.
A 3/4 size Satellite bass. Huge thick strings and white!

I learnt how to play bass plugging it into my stereo and playing along with Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Killing Joke and whatever else I could work out and play along with be it metal, punk or alternative rock.

We played in various bands together until my early 20's. Our first gig was when I was 16 and we played 5 Killing Joke covers and one of our own tracks. Our singer dressed as Jesus with a sheet as a tunic and a crown of thorns. Strange but interesting times!

Whichever band I was in there was always someone who left and any momentum gained was lost. The situation repeated constantly and I got more and more disillusioned with how much time I was wasting joining bands and learning new material only for them to implode.

As a bass player you don't normally tend to write a lot of material for the band but I was writing and developing a lot of my own music with bass, guitars and keyboards and samplers and loops and which was very rewarding but I always took a back seat for whichever ego was in control of the band. I think the final straw was spending months learning and practicing with a bands last CD for a series of gigs as support for the metal band Cradle Of Filth only for the guitarist to not be able to remember how to play his own songs at the first rehearsal.

The gigs never happened and I chose to work on my own music since then which has given me total freed om without genre restrictions and I can write and record what I want when I want.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

I'm a fan of all types of music from metal to electronic music which I like to reflect in my own music. I think that once you find your own identity musically and write a lot you develop your own style and sound which isn't influenced as much by what you listen to.

I take my inspiration from current affairs, a phrase I've read or heard, films, books, culture. Everything around me in general can have an impact if it moves me enough to stimulate me to create something be it a positive or negative emotion.

The Dark Realm album and the Dark Winter album were both an exploration of dark/creepy/horror soundtrack music.

Sometimes I have a clear idea of what I want to write like the album Secrets, with titles like Secrets, Lies, Smoke, Mirrors

which was influenced by the American election campaign, British politics and big corporations avoiding paying taxes.

The track Justice from the Exploration E.P. was as a result of the George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests.

It was a very volatile time worldwide.

 

Most of the time the music and the feel of the track will suggest the title.

The album Introspection was a loose concept album to do with Covid with a before, during and after which is evident if you go through the titles.

I write very quickly and usually have the track written in 3 hours and then a couple more hours for lead riffs and tweaking.

I tend to mainly write on the keyboards at the moment and usually start with a chord or sound or riff which I will develop, add drums,

bass and extra sounds and instruments and riffs.

99% of my tracks even though they are instrumentals are written in the traditional song format of intro, verse, chorus etc.

I may well go back to doing vocals again but enjoy the freedom that instrumentals offer at the moment.

My influences are a mixture of music that I have listened to for years (Slayer, Devin Townsend, Killing Joke, Kraftwerk, Jarre)

and new discoveries through Bandcamp and Twitter (Mike Allen, Garrett Harrington, The Broken Cradle and many more)

but when I write what comes out may have no relation to what I have been listening to.

I love the blank canvas with music. You can do any emotion, as simple or complex as you want. Explore and push yourself, experiment and surprise yourself with a new melody, chord sequence, riff, drum beat or sound. There are no boundaries to stop your imagination and with instrumentals there is no rigid channelling of what this piece of music is about. It can go and travel and transport you with it to some different place and emotional instant moment.

Making music has always been about escapism for me. Leaving this reality behind. It can be an emotional release, a physical freedom without moving, a journey to somewhere new.

Great music should make you feel. It should make you be moved. It should enliven you and make you tingle and awake the senses.

I still love that moment when everything just flows and whatever you come up with works and it enhances the track even more.

That is the magic that makes me not just like making music, but LOVE making music.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Don't depend on anyone to do something for you when you can do it yourself.

Use all the tools available to you on the internet and promote yourself constantly on Twitter and other social media platforms.

Internet radio stations and playlists are a good way of sharing your music.

Don't try and follow a trend because they change all the time. Be true to yourself and make the music that comes naturally.

Don't be afraid to ask, experiment, network and share resources with every musician you come into contact with.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

Being a solo artist, I have to work that much harder at self-promotion rather than four people in a band all doing it.

I tend to put out Mp4 videos with my music and own artwork often daily on Twitter so that new people can discover me and followers can have a different track to also discover/listen to that they may not have already heard. I'm constantly sending my music out to various internet radio stations and I create playlists an hour long with the music I like at that moment which with one of my own tracks included which I share. Part of my Eclectic series.

I don't give up or give in with my music promotion and writing and recording even if my numbers of listeners fluctuate either way and I don't say that that E.P. or album was a sucess so I'll repeat it like a formula that established artists do.

I see lots of bands/artists give up too easily at the first knockback or hurdle. I don't.

If you have self-belief and pride in what you create then pushing it to other people is a joy not a chore.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

I release an album or E.P. a month at the moment so as long as the inspiration is flowing, I will keep doing that in whichever music genre I choose to work in.

I'd like to get back to doing more guitar-based music with vocals next year.

No plans to play any gigs at the moment due to Covid but I'd like to do some in the future.

How'd you get started in music? Carlos (lead guitar) started the band with Dave, his tattoo artist. Tommy (vocals) is friends with Dave, so he came on as the singer. Neal (bass) is friends with our first drummer, and Konstantin (drums) answered an ad we had put out online! A pretty random gathering, but it’s worked so far.  Who are your inspirations or influences? Any old-school 80s/90s rock & metal; LA Guns, Warrant, Skid Row, Dokken, Van Halen, Extreme, Mr Big, Poison, etc.  What advice would you offer aspiring performers? Just go for it! Get a band together, write some songs, record a decent demo, and get in touch with a few local promoters. That’s all it takes.  How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers? Carlos is very much a metal guitarist, but Tommy is more of a melodic-rock singer. This gives us a unique sound that harks back to the glory days of glam metal, but is firmly rooted in the present. We’re dragging the 80s kicking and screaming into the 21st century!  Any new gigs or albums in the future? Yes! We’re playing at the Limelight in Belfast with Conjuring Fate and So Long Until The Seance on Jan 15th, and we’re currently taking preorders for our second album.  Here's my interview with Chuck Oney

How'd you get started in music? I got started in music in School band in 5th grade as a drummer. I got started in rock bands at 15 by joining a band that needed a drummer after I moved to a new state and new neighborhood and a neighbor saw me loading in drums. Then I switched to singing because I found I was better at that and most bands needed a singer or someone who was willing to sing.

Who are your inspirations or influences? Definitely The Beatles and KISS. Later on Glam bands like the New York Dolls, Angel and Poison & Power Pop bands like Raspberries, The Knack and Cheap Trick. Also Jellyfish, Nirvana, Marvelous 3 and Foo Fighters.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Practice as much as you can and then join a group or band. I was lucky, my first real band that I joined as a singer had guys who were incredibly talented at 15 & 16 years old. I was the oldest at 18 and those guys could really play!

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers? I copied other people’s style at first and then I started slowly developing my own. Now I just try and be myself recording and onstage. It took me many years to get to that point. But If you keep at it, it will come.

Any new gigs or albums in the future? Right now I have a Christmas show on Dec 23rd, my last for the year. My new record “Authorize Information” came out in late May this year on Vinyl, Disc and Cassette and just came out on the streaming channels and digitally Dec 6th. Right now I am currently writing new songs, but no new plans to record as of yet. Thanks so much for asking!!!

DJ Interviews: Shawn Sidetrack

 Here's my interview with singer Shawn Sidetrack

How'd you get started in music?

     I started in a band when I was 16.  A friend of mine that I had class with invited me over to listen to him and some other guys messing around with playing some guitar and singing through a PA that they had.  My friend asked me to sing some Nirvana covers and I found my click in being a vocalist.  From that day, we started our own band called XFO, which over the years had different meanings (starting with Xtremely F'n Odd to currently X-it From Ordinary).  

     Throughout the years, I have been involved with several different bands and songwriters.  In the early 2000's, I was the lead singer for my other friend and guitar player's band called Cyndi Cyanide. We made 2 albums and ultimately called it quits around 2004. From then I did alot of solo writing and went on hiatus musically around 2011.  Then in 2020 around the time covid was at it's fullest impact, my brother introduced me to an app called Bandlab.  Instantly I was back into songwriting.  On Bandlab, I started writing music again with my brother (who goes by Unomandojo).  We wrote and recorded an entire punk rock album and other material under the moniker 550 Rounds.

     Since I was introduced to Bandlab, through the app I have met many musicians and collaborators to write, record, and release music with.  I now make music with artists such as the awesome Reckless Velvet, Seventh Sound, Brian Emerton, and Fallen Piipl as well as write solo stuff.

     Being a vocalist and lyricist has always been my main focus in music.  I play guitar and bass, but primarily just for writing.  And there you have it...the history of Shawn Sidetrack.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

     I am heavily influenced by the grunge and post-grunge era of music.  Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Silverchair, and Bush just to name a few.  I am also influenced by punk rock and metal bands like Bad Religion and Metallica.  My later years I became inspired by simpler music, such as folk.  It is an intimate songwriting muse for me.

     My inspirations are everyday things and circumstances and also good, rocking music being pitched to me by awesome collaborators.  I like to tell interpretive stories with most of my lyrics.  When people hear my music, I like them to take what they hear as their own and create their own versions of it.  A flexible listening experience that can guide them through the day or evolve with any circumstance they are dealing with.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

     Find your niche, but mesh your genres and make them uniquely your own.  Example...If you like folk and metal, take an attribute from each and make a new genre.  Or stick with a certain genre to succeed.  I am still trying to find a primary genre.  But ultimately...do it for the love of doing it.  Never mold a passion just to get followers.  You want listeners, not just followers.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

     Lyrics.  I keep my lyrics to a relatable level for everyone.  Every now and then I will dive into obscurity, but keeping the words open to interpretation I feel keeps listeners interested.

     Also my vocals.  I keep my vocals at an underlyingly angsty and soulful level.  The more soul and passion that I put into my singing, the more feeling that comes across.  Feeling is the key.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

     What do I not have going on?? (Laughs)

      I have so many projects on the backburner.  2022 is going to be a busy year for me in music.  I've got alot of punk stuff to put out, more acoustic stuff to put out, and many more collaborations to do this coming year.  Demand and creativity is good and will only trend upwards.

     I can't say that for gigs, though.  I am primarily just a songwriter and recording artist, although I am aiming to put out some more virtual performances and increase the Youtube content definitely so...get ready ;).

How'd you get started in music?

Music has always been a big part of our lives individually. Having bonded over the same type of music - it has become apparent that we all grew up listening to the same bands that were introduced to us by our parents and peers. We all got involved with music to play the songs we love and laterally as we entered our teens (many years ago now) we wanted to attempt to write our own music. Steven (drums) & Craig (guitars) have been in bands together since 2004, Graham (bass) & Ewan (guitars) having been in different bands for at least 10 years and Laura who did a degree in musical performance and a love of musicals.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

We all have a very different musical background which results in a broad range of influences. As Red Hearted Vibrations we have a love of every genre of music, however you can definitely hear a big Fleetwood Mac / 80's hard rock influence with some modern injections of alt/rock and indie inspirations in some of our more melodic/ballad numbers

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Start slow and take your time learning how each member in your band works and understand everyones influences and creative ideas. It is often too easy to trust one or two people in the band take creative control. Writing together creates a unified front and means everyone enjoys the songs you write and perform. We also advise networking as often as you can and playing with a variety of different local venues and some further afield to get your name out there.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

We have the ability to jump in and out of genre with great ease depending on the songs we are writing due to the years of experience of writing songs in multiple different genres. We are able to avoid producing songs that sound too much like each other, whilst at the same time maintaining a huge sound that we have worked hard on whilst writing/performing and recording. Laura stands out from other female vocalists in our genre as she has such a great vocal range that lets her perform and sing the most challenging of songs with great ease. She has the ability of turning covers which we have done into her own version which often results in people thinking we have written them!

DJ Interviews: Souls

 Here's my interiew with the band Souls

How'd you get started in music?

So i’ll answer this one as the entirety of the band. Souls got started from the falling apart of several other bands. We saw the most driven, motivated members of each other’s declining bands and stitched together this one. 

Who are your inspirations or influences?

The band originally started with the inspiration from dark metallic hardcore bands of that late 2000s deathwish influx; such as  Trap Them, Carpathian, Life Long Tragedy, etc. 

The more the band members got to know each other and dig into deeper, core influences we started to shift that intention and motivation. We started to realize a lot of that band had more metal dominated influences and wanted to explore that potential. Now the influences fall more in line with Chimaira, Slipknot, Korn, Saliva... more core memory influenced groups. Essentially we stopped trying to impress our peers or musicians around us and dove more into what we felt drove us to the basics of where we are now. In essence; it felt good to write a riff that reminded us of why we picked up a guitar in the first place and we wanted to modernize that.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

We've been around for a minute and I think the few pieces of advice to offer any aspiring musician, artist, band, whatever it may be;

- Always keep your conflicts and struggles internal. The more you let the outside world dictate your art, the harder it will become.

- Never put your band in the hands of anyone that isnt in the van with you.

- Dont trust a single sound guy.

- Dont undersell yourself or your music. IE; stop driving 600 miles to play second on a bill and get paid $40. It will never pay off. Value yourself and set boundaries on those values.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

We have never aimed to set ourselves apart from anyone. I think there is a certain beauty in finding the common ground with other artists, as well as your fans. There is enough division and elitism in our community and I think embracing even the smallest similarities and loves is so much more important than trying to constantly stand out or become a black sheep in a community that was built upon black sheep.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

And yes. We just wrote a record called "Impurity; everything in me"

DJ Interviews: From Carbon

 Here's my interview with th band  FromCarbon 

How'd you get started in music?

30 years ago I started a band called “Tripwire” in my cousins garage, I was babysitting him and he had a drum kit, he was the only one who could play an instrument so naturally he was in, we thought we were great but the neighbours didn’t agree.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

We all have lots varied influences in the band, we all love Pink Floyd, The Chameleons and The Cure, I’m a big U2, James and Arcade Fire fan I’d say those 3 acts have had the biggest influence on me. Our Bassist is into classical music so we do have quite a good mix. I really love female singers too I adore, Bjork, PJ Harvey , Martha Wainwright, Tanya Donnelly and my favourite singer in recent years is Eliza Shaddad her latest album is my album of the year. I also love Katie Ware (Little Sparrow) and persuaded her to sing on our last album, on a beautiful song called “Slowly Decay”.

What advice would you offer aspiring performers?

Do it yourself, don’t expect anyone to come along and offer you something for nothing, we waited to be signed for years and it wasn’t until I met Simon Duffy (Tri-Tone Records) and told him I wanted to record an album it was my lifelong ambition and I’ve never had the chance, and he was like “Why are you waisting your time doing demos, singles snd ep’s then ? Just record the album before someone dies” it was the kick up the butt we needed. We then recorded our first album “wealth” within 13 months. It was surreal how it all came together so quickly in the end but it had took me 20+ years to believe I could do it.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

I think the fact we’re all in our 40s and still improving and writing our best stuff shows the commitment levels we have to being musicians. We’re very good live now and it’s taken years of rehearsals,gigs and tours to get to the point where we are so comfortable on stage that I think it sets us apart. I love playing to people who’ve never heard or seen us before, winning them over and seeing the impact our songs can make is what drives me personally. We’ve had people play our songs at weddings and funerals so we know we can touch people’s hearts. 

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

Yes we’re very busy at the moment recording our third album which is due for release in 2022. We’re airing a few of them at our next gig which is 22.12.21 at the Deaf Institute in Manchester. It’s our only booked gig at the moment but we will be hopefully sorting some dates out for an album launch and From Carbon tour next year. 

Our drummer and I also perform in french band called “Destijl” which is more of an electro/rock style band. Were also recording there next album in December and touring France in May 2022. So we’re extremely busy which is how we like it.
