DJ Interviews: Wild Tibetan Monks Band

How'd you get started in music?

I had started learning guitar when I was about 14. The following year, myself and some friends from school started a band. We really enjoyed it, and even got to play to some large enough crowds, even though we were all still in school.

After secondary school, we all went out separate ways, and that’s when I met Ringo and Liam and we formed Wild Tibetan Monks. That was back in 2011, and we’ve been making music ever since.

In the past year, we’ve really worked hard to get our songs recorded and have started promoting our music. We are excited to see what the future has on store.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

We have always been drawn towards Red Hot Chili Peppers. The way they could create so many different melodies with only three instruments and vocals really inspired us.

We have also been inspired by other classic rock bands, such as Oasis and U2. Hoodie Allen is also up there.

What advice would offer aspiring performers?

Haha, I think we, ourselves would still be classified as aspiring performers!

We’ve been together for about ten years, and we remember one night we were put on after the venue had closed! There was only one guy in the audience and he was cleaning the bar! Pretty sure he was paid to be there!

What I’m trying to get at, is that, as a performer, you have to accept that it is a long road, and you have to be prepared that gigs and events won’t always go as you envisioned, but to still enjoy what you do.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

It’s funny, I think every band feels that they are unique in some way. Whether the listeners feel that way is another thing.

I suppose one aspect that makes us stand out is that we are gradually working on recording and releasing the 15 songs that we have. These tracks have been written over the course of ten years, so a lot of thought and writing has gone into each one. That doesn’t necessarily translate to people enjoying your music though, so we’ll have to see what everyone thinks!

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

Well, we have just released our latest track Lying Next To You. We plan to release a lyric video for it in the coming weeks and we will be releasing our next track, Navy, in the coming months.

With the lockdown still ongoing, we actually cannot wait to do a live gig again, and we are currently looking into organising one, once live events are permitted again.

 So watch this space!
