DJ Interviews: Grey goes black

Hey guys DJ Dizzy here & I had the pleasure of interviewing a band who're called Grey Goes Black as they shared their musical origins so everyone here they are Grey Goes Black!

How'd you get started in music?

First off we would like to thank you for your interest in writing about us.  We are honored you’ve taken your time to talk to us about our music.  We’ve just released our latest EP The Slow Death of Everything with Shore Dive Records along with Grind Ethos https://shorediverecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-slow-death-of-everything

This is our first interview since the release and we very excited to talk about the music.

To answer your question..It took a while to think about how we started making music.  Individually we each have our own story of how we got started but as a band we started because we felt we really had something to say through music... Steve and I played together in a different band years ago that dissolved. Then Steve and I got back together and recorded our first EP.   About a year after that we met James and grey goes black finally felt complete.  Since then we’ve recorded a few EPS and have just released out latest record “The Slow Death of Everything” with Shore Dive Records.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

Our inspirations have been real life experiences.  Sometimes inspiration could be from a story we’ve read. It could come from feeling a certain way about something happening in the world.  Our music is a diary, a memoir, a punching bag,  a question,  a love note, a break up letter, we don’t always know where it comes from. It just appears.  We try and capture that moment or feeling  and just find a way to express it in a way that feels right. We try to never make it a soapbox or find the answers.

We have such a wide variety of influences... Anything that touches us or moves us. We have no map or rules that we box ourselves in with.  We’ve always gone with more of an anything goes  philosophy and explore any idea or sounds we create.

What advice would offer aspiring performers?

Don’t ever follow a trend. Ever.  We’ve seen plenty of bands try and follow whats cool and that never works out. It’s never authentic.   It will never help you find your way.   Make music that moves you and inspires you. Never be limited by a lack of equipment.  Don’t be intimidated to try something.  Don’t be afraid to fail.  If you like what you’re doing ignore any negative criticism but be open to all ideas and different points of view.  Never quit, you can’t because you’re a musician and you need to share that with others.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

That’s a tough question.  We don’t purposely try to set ourselves apart from anyone.   We hardly look at it from the perspective of measuring up to anyone else either.  Every musician sounds like themselves when they play it’s best to not try and sound like someone else.  Occasionally we do sometimes find ourselves playing something and we realize oh that sounds like this band or that song and we’ll try to find a different way of expressing the song if that ever happens.  We stumble into our sound. We accidentally find a melody. We never set out to sound like another band.  We are always trying out new ideas and explore what feels good to us.  We always make music for ourselves and if other people like it then that’s awesome.

Any new gigs or albums in the future?

Hopefully there are safe ways that we can do that.  We’ve struggled to even rehearse because of the current pandemic.  We have to see what the future brings. We would really love to get the opportunity to play the songs from The Slow Death of Everything in a live setting.

Special thanks to them for doing this interview & I wish them lots of luck in their music so until then I'll catch you on the Flipside! Stay awesome & rock n roll!
