DJ Interviews: Jazz Patterson

Hey there guys, DJ Dizzy here & I had the pleasure of interviewing a singer who answers to the name of Jazz Patterson who shared her musical beginnings.

How'd you get started in music?

I've always loved to sing since I was a little girl in rural Arizona, my first experience with live music was when Big & Rich invited me onstage to sing with them a cappella when I was 7 at the Arizona State Fair. But I released my first song 'Black Gloves' in 2014 which I recorded with my singing teacher Beth Cohen at her little house studio.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

I'm heavily influenced by Evanescence, Deftones, Korn, Marilyn Manson, and The Pretty Reckless. Amy Lee would probably be my biggest inspiration although I do not have the insane vocal range that she does haha. I've always described my sound as "if Amy Lee and Jonathan Davis had a baby".

What advice would offer aspiring performers?

Well I don't know how good the advice I would be giving is since I have not myself performed live since high school...
But social media is a very good tool to get an online audience before you can start growing your live audience. However I don't condone messaging EVERY person that follows you on twitter about your music. I think its slightly obnoxious, just try to be genuine and if people are interested in you then they will check out your music.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

I would say being a female metal singer already sets me a little apart from the mainstream... but I think my voice sets me apart... its much deeper and richer than a lot of the female singers in my genre right now.

Any new gigs or albums in the future

There's always going to be new gigs or albums in the future, or at least thats the goal! Unfortunately I don't have anything set in stone during this uncertain time but I am planning on doing a new version of Black Gloves that will hopefully come out in the next month or so.

Special thanks to her for doing this interview, & much luck to her & her music. So until then I'll catch you the Flipside! Stay awesome & rock n roll!

DJ Interviews: The Deep Sea Parrots

Hello there guys, DJ Dizzy here & here's an interview I've done with an up & coming band called The Deep Sea Parrots

How'd you get started in music?

I had a guitar kicking around, so I started teaching myself at 19. Always been a poet, and I wanted to combine the two as a way of getting my poetry out there. I was a raver then knocked around with some heavy rock n rollers in my teenage years, who were worse than the Gallagher brothers. I was always splitting them up from drunken fights. They inspired me though, they had great taste in music.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

Influences gotta be Dylan, Hendrix, Lennon, Oasis,

What advice would offer aspiring performers?

Don't worry about anything. And don't copy people. Be yourself.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

My poetry is hopefully a bit different. And the quantity. I;ve nearly a thousand songs on Spotify now.

Any new gigs or albums in the future

I've just completed my 80th solo album (in 12 years), that's 70 acoustic blues and 10 EDM. 'Mashed - the best of EDM' is out now. That's under my solo name alexthomasdavis. My band The Deep Sea Parrots are halfway through their debut album, Astral Surfing For Idiots and it will be out next year. Also working on album number 2, Cows Eat Conkers. You can hear acoustic versions of both albums right now on spotify, in anticipation of the full studio experience. We'll be gigging to promote the album next year post covid. I plan to get to 100 albums, then write a book, called 'How I wrote a 100 albums and barely made a penny'!!

Special thanks to them for doing this interview & much luck to them & their music. So until then I'll catch you on The Flipside! Stay Awesome & rock n roll!

DJ Interviews: Chanel Number 1

Hey there guys DJ Dizzy here & I had the honor of interviewing a band who answer to Chanel Number 1 as they spoke on their musical career.

How'd you get started in music?
You could call me a late bloomer as I only started playing guitar in my 30's and that sparked the urge to write my own songs. Although I did quite a lot of creative writing throughout my life, it was only in 2019 that I entered a local South African songwriting competition, reaching 15th place, I couldn't find a singer and had to resort to singing myself. It was only then I thought okay, maybe I should pursue this incredible dream in music as a songwriter. So October 2019 I released my single, Just because of you. The journey has been amazing so far and I have met the most wonderful artist across social media.

Who are your inspirations or influences?
I must admit I'm an Elvis Presley fanatic. His energy and passion for music is inspiring. He'll remain the king of music for me. Female artists such as Dolly Parton, Cher, P!nk, Jewel and Carrie Underwood impress me with their artistry. Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi and John Meyer are also superb. My hope would be to become a better songwriter and aspire to write songs others would find meaningful.

What advice would offer aspiring performers?
As I'm a complete newcomer myself in the music world, I would say keep your dream alive, work towards it every day and don't give up.

How do you set yourself apart from other bands or singers?
At this stage I'm still finding my feet and really exploring different genres. The songs I have released range from folk to rock. With each song I release I serve the song as best I can with the variety of genres that are available to me. At this stage the 6-8 week release strategy is working for me and I hope my consistency will pay off in the long run. I am also an avid supporter of indie artists, I like supporting them, sharing their content and making playlists. I don't really have a gimmick or strategy to set myself apart. What I do know is that I am a nice person and want to remain true to myself. What you see is what you get.

Any new gigs or albums in the future
Yes, I have another rock release, called Hercules, planned for the end of October 2020. It is a high energy rock song with beautiful guitar work. Gigging hasn't been an option for me due to lockdown measures still in places in South Africa.

As this year has been a bit of a let down due to the pandemic, artists and people all over the world trying to get back on their feet again, I plan to release my first Christmas song. We all need some positivity and above all hope.

I have high aspirations for 2021, working on songs that capture my heart and hopefully will touch those who listen to it as well. The best is yet to come.

DJ Interviews: Say Yes Do Nothing.

Hey there guys DJ Dizzy here & I had the pleasure of sitting down with a singer named David Eastman of the band Say Yes Do Nothing as he spoke on his musical beginnings.

SAY YES, DO NOTHING BIOGRAPHY AND REVIEWS

Say Yes, Do Nothing (www.sayyesdonothing.com) are a north London band whose gritty and poetic street reports on homelessness, abortion, abuse and alcoholism are a raw mix of the blues, alt/country and Americana.

“Best band name, ever” - New Music Saturday

“Timeless and aggressively up-to-date London grit with Nashville dirt underpinned by deeply rooted Americana song craft” – Rock Box

American singer songwriter David Eastman (vocals/guitar) formed SYDN in 2018  in Kentish Town where he found Simon (bass/vocals), Michael (drums) and Dan (lead guitar/vocals) hiding in a dark rehearsal space, ready to do justice to his songs of love gone awry and families gone rogue.

“SYDN take a real-life situation and have the intestinal fortitude to put it into lyrics and into a song, and it’s going to reach a lot of people” - The Mind of Little Rage

Winners of the 2108 Future Music Showcase Award, SYDN have headlined sell out shows across London and appeared on festival bills, including the Marlow Rock Bottom Festival. Maximum Volume Music featured SYDN as Band of the Day and the band have appeared in blogs like Zever Blackbull’s Top 40 Indie Music Chart, Lonely Oak Radio, HOT VOX’s One To Watch, FV Music Blog, John’s Indie Music Zone, The Retweeter’s Bands to Watch and MerchTablePro Discovery list. Further support has come from radio shows and podcasts including New Scotland Radio, Cowboy Joe Radio,Bigtime Radio, The Colorado Phil Show, Angel’s Indie Lounge and Expand Your Playlist.

“When the band begins to play there is an engulfing wave of nostalgia, coupled with an inescapable feeling that nostalgia is what caused this mess in the first place” -  By The Freaks

Frontman Dave grew up in the USA, where his previous album Apron Strings won the Los Angeles DIY Album of the Year Award and was featured on the TV show Dawson’s Creek. Dave developed his musical vocabulary listening to Dylan, the Stones, Townes van Zandt, Merle Haggard and Springsteen, as well as reading MAD Magazine, Henry Miller and Harper Lee.

Raw and tight, his songtelling storywriting has an infectious character that howls, shakes, rattles and rolls, just as if Leonard Cohen was writing for the Yardbirds with a lairy Jimmy Page in tow.

When not writing, Dave spends his time managing medical relief in the world’s worst war zones. Say Yes, Do Nothing are The US of A meets north London way, way uptown.

“Say Yes, Do Nothing is a special band from across the seas in London.  They’re true to their name all the way down to every lyric. It’s easy for all of us to say yes or agree with what we think it’s right but, it’s a lot harder to help make that change with your own two hands” - The Lemon Radio

How'd you get started in music?

I wrote my first song at age 13 on a guitar with busted strings. I played it for a girl and she was not impressed, but I keep on trying. Our band formed in 2018 after I moved to London to run a medical relief organization. Now I split my time between war zones, writing songs and walking my dog.

Who are your inspirations or influences?

Liz Phair, Bruce Springsteen, Merle Haggard, The Rolling Stones, Neil Young

What advice would offer aspiring performers?

Connect with your audience. Learn to eat canned food. Wear ear plugs. Read poetry on the train.

How do you set yourselves apart from other bands or singers?

The lyrics are as important as the beat and the melody. Our songs all tell true experiences with homelessness, abortion, abuse and alcoholism.

Any new gigs or albums in the future

New single and video for ‘Hum of the Hidden Machine’ out on October 23!

Special thanks to them for doing this interview & much love & luck to them & their music. So until then I'll catch you on The Flipside! Stay awesome & rock n roll!
